As a teacher I believe that the most significant learning occurs in situations that are both meaningful and realistic. I believe that education serves a broader purpose than the mastery of content knowledge but entails the learning and utilization of tools for success in life and in further education. I intend to guide my students through the scientific processes to discover ideas for themselves, helping them visualize science as a process of asking questions, conducting investigations to answer those questions, building explanations based on evidence.
Teaching is not just about knowing and sharing content knowledge, the brightest minds of the world are not all fit for education. Teaching is an art and a talent to be mastered through time. A teacher must reevaluate their methods based on who they are teaching and how the students will learn best. By imparting them with a passion for the way things work around them the students themselves will find the passion to do their best. Students deserve an educator's passion for both the subject at hand and learning as a whole and that is how I shall teach, with passionate exploration of all things in the classroom environment and in life.
I believe that to be most effective as an instructor, one must create a safe environment that is interactive and collaborative and that promotes problem-solving and critical thinking skills while demonstrating enthusiasm and express confidence in the student’s ability to learn and be successful. A welcoming environment accommodates a variety of learning styles and encourages students to present their opinions while respecting the opinions of others. By giving students a voice in class, not only do the students benefit from peer learning by enriching the course material with personal experiences and knowledge, but they also take responsibility for their own learning. Promoting independent thinking is essential so that students can take what they have learned and apply it in real-life situations.
Therefore, I believe each day I should teach under the presumption that if I were a student in my classroom that day would I be excited to be there and to come back the next day? This begins with earning and maintaining their respect to encourage them to share my enthusiasm and appreciation for the workings of the world around them. Practically speaking, this means learning their names as soon as possible, learning a little about who they are and learning why they are in my class. It means taking the time to ask questions when they are late or absent. It means I will recognize that each and every student as individuals with unique experiences, talents, knowledge, and voice.
I believe that every student is a scholar and therefore has the ability to learn and the right to a quality education without bias, without regard to ethnicity or socioeconomic status. In my classroom we are all equals because of our differences. Certainly, every student has a different learning style, however by understanding each student’s unique abilities I can provide them each with equal chances for success and the ability to achieve greatness through the pursuit of higher education. Ultimately it is only by showing this respect to my students that I deserve to receive respect from them.
I demonstrate my respect for my students by maintaining a curious nature as a teacher. As a scientist, I constantly pursue new knowledge though my curiosity and I am eager to explore both the subject material as well as the relationship between the material and the students own lives. To be curious means to accept the risk of being wrong, of finding new ways to understand old data, of engaging in an exchange with students and being willing to learn from them. However, with curiosity comes purpose, I will not teach a lesson simply because it is a required concept, I will ensure that in my classroom, students understand the daily objectives as well as the long term objectives for the class. Students will also be able to take what they have learned and visualize how the material can apply to their lives outside of the classroom.
I believe teaching is a lifestyle and not a mere 9-5pm job, because as a teacher we are preparing the young minds of the future and impacting their lives in ways in which we can only begin to understand. Teaching is for the students. I teach my content area because I am passionate about science but I teach, because I love working with students and seeing them do well as they expand their knowledge base in order to achieve success in life. To be an effective teacher, students must see and feel my enthusiasm, and my willingness to give up afternoons, evenings, and weekends to grade, prepare and come up with captivating and exciting lessons to engage them, or to support them in sporting events, plays, presentations and award recognitions.
As professionals entrusted with the education of young minds, teachers must facilitate learning and equip them with the tools necessary for success in life. The classroom should be a safe haven, where students feel welcomed and supported and eager to learn. However, to do so, everyone must know and understand that there are classroom rules and lab safety procedures that must be enforced consistently all the time. Adolescents love to test their limits, so if they observe a teacher being inconsistent with discipline, they will be inconsistent with their behavior. Mutual respect and understanding comes from following through with classroom rules and explanations that students are consistently made aware of.
Teaching and learning are a simultaneous journey for both the teacher and students when a student is motivated and inspired by a teacher’s genuine intensity for learning. In choosing to become a teacher, I have made the commitment to myself and my future students to be the best academic, personal, an ethical role model I can be. I am prepared to rise to the challenges of teaching. I promise to do so and to be ready to adapt, react and discover new strategies to improve. The best teachers are those that never stop learning.
